Woo Removes Amazon Affiliate Link Tag
-
I’m using the WooCommerce plugin purely to redirect traffic to Amazon for affiliate commissions.
Therefore when setting up products, the “Product Type” selected is “External/Affiliate Product”.
I then enter the Amazon Affiliate URL provided from within my Amazon Associates account. This includes a URL String that looks something like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/XXXXXXXXX/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=companyname-50&camp=1759&creative=9375&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=XXXXXXXXXX&linkId=8hr50d2d81e452235085ddf7a960df2However, When the “Add to cart” button is clicked on the product page, the link is shortened to this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/XXXXXXXXX/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8
Essentially, the tag information goes missing. In the page source, the URL is still it’s full length version, but as soon as the “add to cart” button is pressed, the URL is trimmed.
Thankfully, Amazon is clever, and it still recognises this as a click on my affiliate link.
Unfortunately, Amazon isn’t as clever as it needs to be. To take advantage of Amazon’s “Onelink” functionality, where a user will be redirected to their local Amazon Marketplace if the product can be found in that marketplace, the URL needs to remain in it’s full length state.
WooCommerce, by stripping out the “Tag” portion of the URL prevents the Amazon Associates “Onelink” functionality from working – and thus prevents Amazon Affiliates from gaining commissions from more than 1 Amazon Marketplace.
This is my summary of the issue and how I understand it.
I have checked to see if this was a theme issue. I created a post, placed a link using the same URL as I used for the product, and then tested the page. On clicking the link, the URL stayed in tact and I was redirected to my local marketplace. Voila’ it works in a post – but NOT in the shop functionality provided by WooCommerce. Is there a reason that WooCommerce Plugin for WordPress strips out everything after the “&” in the URL – and is there a fix we can apply to ensure that the URL string stays in tact?
Otherwise, this is quite limiting to the use of the shop and product functionality for someone who wants to take advantage of the ever growing Amazon Global Marketplaces.
Thanks in advance
