will my idea work with wordpress

Hey all, I just wanted to get an opinion on a site I am thinking about building. But before I do, I need to see if the plugins available for wordpress will work for what I hope to do.

Without giving away the whole concept, my idea is to make an informational site that would largely be populated by users that would log into the site. I think what I would need is a basically php generated template that users can log into and fill in a tailor made form that would populate the fields on the site. In a sense this would be similar to a wiki, but I’m not sure I want it constantly editable once the content is placed.

So my idea is to have the topics in a list that people can choose from if thy know about the topic, fill in the information, submit it for review, where I will also add some affiliate links, and pictures to hopefully make some money, then post it. I may include a form for users to make corrections if needed, but they would have to be reviewed as well.

So the questions I have are, what would I need to do to make a custom database table. I have seen things to make custom fields, but I guess I would need to know how to separate that data into a unique template, and where would I place that template or sql statements within a normal theme setup on wordpress in order to continue utilizing the remaining theme’s design.
