Wiget Categories vs manage Categories?

Pretty new user here. I am using a newspaper theme (rockin newspaper 3 column) and I’ve got enough of the CSS figured out. I am trying to add content and I’m running into a wall. I’m essentially trying to manage content…not really a tradional blog.

There are 2 sidebars, left and right. I want to add topics or headings on the left and then underneath them have the information on other pages. Ex. Topic = Basketball..then underneath that I’d like to add various pages that have the schedule, rosters, etc.

I am also planning on posting game stories and photos.

My hangup is adding categories. My thinking is that is how I will have my Topic and sub-topics I spoke of earlier.

Q: What is the difference between Categories Widgets and the categorries added by using Manage/Categories from the dashboard?

Q: When I add a widget category it shows appropriately in my left sidebar. However, underneath it is populated by the catagory from manage/categories. Why?

If I add another widget category then the same manage/categories show up underneath the new one.

So what happens is I have 3 or 4 widget categories, ie. football, basketball, baseball, soccer and the same manage/categories are under each one.
