widgets on home page

    Whatever I do, I cant get widgets on the home page? I have this instruction page: https://quirm.net/2011/09/15/widgetizing-any-page/ which I used.

    The page tells me to create a new widget area and then add a piece of code on the page. I would like to do this for the home page but it doesnt seem to work.

    Additionally, anything I type on the home.php (i.e echo “hello”) it doesnt get printed out to screen. If i change index.php/loop.php to add a string, it does get outputted.
