Widgets not showing on Blog

Ok, Just installed 3.1 yesterday, so I am playing around
with the default theme. I noticed when I tried to move
widgets over to the right, they did not appear on the blog.
in fact, the 2 widgets that are on the blog did not even move.
I also tried to install another theme, and the right widget
area vanished altogether, so I went back to default theme again.

ideas?
