In wp-admin/apearance/widgets I have lost the ability to move or edit the content of widgets. The widgets display properly on my blog and I can do some editing in the customizer, but the standard html widgets page just displays. This appears to be a recent problem, but I am not certain since it’s been a while since I have had to use that page.

I’m not sure this is any help, but when I place the hand icon over a “show detail” arrow on a widget, the arrow gets a blue circle around it. No action takes place.

I haven’t made any changes to my site in quite a while. Any thoughts?

  • WP 5.5 made two changes that affected scripts, and it has caused a lot of problems. One is the removal of jquery-migrate which can cause old scripts loaded by plugins to error, which means that WP scripts can’t run. The other is the way the loading of the scripts is handled, and the order got messed up, so some WP scripts are failing.
Both should be fixed in a 5.5.1 release, which is imminent.
In the meantime, you can use the jQuery Migrate Helper plugin temporarily, which fixes both problems. (It also shows messages telling you if you have old scripts that need to update for the old jQery.)

Installing that plugin fixed it! Thank you so much for your help.
