We’ve recently encountered an issue on one of our websites. When visiting the Widgets page and making changes to a widget, the following javascript error is thrown…

Error: Syntax error, unrecognized expression: The site is experiencing technical difficulties.
    jquery.js:2:12681
    init /wp-content/plugins/wordfence/js/admin.ajaxWatcher.1563297204.js?ver=7.3.5:17

The error causes any widget that is saved to spin and the changes never get saved. WordPress and the plugins on the server are all current. The server is a Linux CentOS server running PHP 7.2.19. WordPress is at 5.2.2 and WordFence at 7.3.5.

I tried going to Whitelisted URLs and changing the “Monitor background requests from an administrator’s web browser for false positives” to only Admin Panel based on some advice I found in another post but that did not seem to change anything.

Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Wil

  • Hi @wilhud,

We’ve had reports of users getting syntax errors as a result of admin.ajaxWatcher, and i’m happy to report that this has been fixed and updated within the upcoming releases. (Internal Ref: #FB2102)

In the meantime, what you can do is disable both Front-end and Admin Panel within Wordfence -> All Options ( https://i.imgur.com/J7QpocC.png )

Note that once you’ve done that, you need to fully refresh the page with the widgets.

    Dave
