• I know this is a common problem, and I am sure it has to do with my newbness to this program, but is there any way to get my widgets to work?
I change the name of the file in my FTP and it will work again, but legit, not one widget has consistently worked without me getting a fatal error.

  • odd, could it be a file permissions issue? try working through the doc here and see if any of this helps.

Are these the native widgets or do they belong to specific plugins?

I am not sure what a native widget is? I was under the impression that widgets were just downloadable add-ons for your website.
Am I supposed to download a specific plugin first, and than add the widget?

So widgets are available “out of the box” with WordPress and some plugins will add extra widgets.

So I guess the question is do you have a problem with all widgets, even those which are native to WordPress, i.e. the ones which are available as soon as WordPress is installed. Or do you only have a problem with widgets which are available after installing a plugin?

Ahh I see what you are saying
The Only widget I have running is askimet, it seemed that all my other previous widgets would fatal error my site.
I went into my FTP and changed all the names and tried to single-handedly pick the ones that did it, but it ended up being pretty much all of them.
Some of them only gave me the issue when I activated the widget/plugin, and some gave me the issue even when I placed it in my plugin folder.
I think I need a beginners-page to widgets and plugins, as I dont think I have a clear understanding as to the objective and process of placing these things in the site.
I tried the Calender widget on the site, and that seemed to work fine.

When you say that you “…change the name of the file in my FTP and it will work again…” what do you mean? Can you provide a step by step description of ehat you do?

Also have you tried reading through the file permissions page above?

From your other comments it sounds like the native widgets work? e.g. The calendar widget.

I presume you have read through the page here which goes some way into explaining about widgets?

    Please Help!!

mmm…that looks to me like you are getting a 404 error which translates into page not found for us normal folks ;-).

    Have you deleted something vital?

You might need to re-install you WordPress installation from scratch.
