Widget displaying an article list

Hello,
I have a wish when using the widget. I would like to combine article and template functions in the widget.
When I show it with the article option even the child articles show up. But the text and the streamer is too big for me.
When I use it with the widget option the text looks more suitable in the widget but no child articles are displayed.
Would it also be possible to choose wether you would like to have the streamers from the front page or not in the widget?

I’m planning to use one for each category, so it would be very nice if one could design it a little bit.
