Widget content still shows when "more" is used to truncate content

On my homepage, my theme shows partial post content (everything before
<!--more-->) and a “continue reading” link for the four most recent posts. Anything I put in this widget still shows after the “continue reading” link for each of those four post summaries. Is there a way to make sure that when a post is truncated by using<!--more-->that the content of this widget is not displayed?
