• I’m using the newest WP install. Everything seems to be working fine. I can see everything on three computers here at home and my iphone with no wifi. Some people are saying they are getting 404 errors.

    site dhumc.com/site

Can someone point me in the right direction to look? I’m lost…

  • Is the site newish? If the domain name was bought recently (last couple of days), it could be that the domain name hasn’t propagated yet.

No the domain is old. dhumc.com has been up for years. I’m installing this in the /site.

    Will it load for you?

It loaded fine for me… Is it the home page that sometimes doesn’t load? Could it be that there a broken link, and that’s what people are seeing?

Ok this is what I have found. I can access the site from ie 6,7,8 and firefox. Some others can some can’t. It doesn’t matter where they are trying from or what browser they are using.

When I load in Firefox and check the errors (tools>Error Console) this is what I see:

Warning: Unknown property 'border-radius'. Declaration dropped.
    Source File: https://dhumc.com/site/wp-content/themes/LivingOS_DELTA/style.css

The server at dhumc.com is taking too long to respond.

I cannot help even if I want to

    Thread Starter vfleming

    (@vfleming)

Do you have any ideas why it would take to long to respond for you but not some others? For some it will load within 2 seconds but for others not at all. That is my whole issue. It makes no sense to me. Maybe a server setting?

    Thank as well 123milliseconds

    @vfleming

dhumc.com/site loads fine for me consistently from my location. The css errors posted above don’t seem likely to cause a 404.

If you can get someone to actually report what link or url they were visiting when they received 404 errors, it might put you on track for a more accurate diagnosis.

I navigated every link I could find on your wordpress site, and all the responses were 200 except for one 301 and a 204 (no content for pixel.quantserve.com). I could not duplicate a 404. Load times were very quick, and there was no unusual behavior present.

    (@vfleming)

Thank you Clayton, you just described my issue to a T. The peoPle getting the 404 are getting it on the whole site. I went to my pastor’s office and tried it myself. I could not load the main page nor /wp-admin.

I should say that I created this site on my server. Noone has an issue visiting that test site. That install is one back from 3.0.5. I installed 3.0.5 on this new server after using plugin that changed my links to the new domain. I then imported my old db and fixed wp-config, etc.

I have disabled all plugins, changed theme etc.

I do know that the new host has pup safe mode turned on and uses pesk(I think that is the name of it).

I don’t know if something on the server setting could cause this but that is the only thing I can think of. There seems to be no rime or reason on who gets “lagged” out. The only way I can duplicate it at all is using the bing app on my iPhone. Can’t find it. Maybe because it is not indexed yet?

A 404 error simply means a requested resource was not found. It’s either there or it isn’t. The site at dhumc.com/site appears to be functioning normally. I did run a link checker against your site, and all links returned a 200 except your comments feed. That was a 404. I’m assuming you just don’t have any comments on the site, because the error is easily duplicated on a test site with no comments.

    dhumc.com/site/comments/feed/ Result: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found

I can’t even take a guess as to what might be happening at this point.

    (@vfleming)

Ok, thank you for your help. Im going to get friends to test and collect information. I will report back any findings.

It might help to take a look at your httpd access/error logs as well. Any actual 404 errors should show up there.

    Hi

I think you have a slow host; sometimes its ok; sometimes so slow it gives 404 errors where it should give timeout message

Clayton James confirmed the 404s are not actually 404s
