• I am going to get flamed here and that is fine but I am going to voice my opinion on this one. The default template in WP sucks, this is something most heavy users and early adapters know. But replacing it with a version of Michael Hellerman’s Kubrick is a bigger mistake.
I will admit that it is nice on the eyes but when I tried to load it on a brand new test install (Mingus) it had htaccess problems. Then to edit it to make it have a banner graphic etc I have to edit it with photoshop??? How many people can afford photoshop. Let’s say Matt converts it out to css, is he also going to take out the plugins or expect all brand new users to learn enough on their first day to learn how to turn it on. I think it is going to be so hard to edit that most people won’t meaning very bland pages that all look alike (are we trying to become MT), I know I don’t want it so how many files will I have to delete to get rid of it but I know it was a pain to get off my test install.
I think there are a lot of people who have worked hard to have an easily editable templates for WP. One of the things I loved about WP over MT is that I did not have to be a rocket scientist to make my blog pretty. I love WP and generally like the development cycle we have been on, but I am not sure that going from a very bad template to a really complex one is the way to go.

  • podz, what a patronizing bunch of poppycock. I appreciate the help you have provided me, and I am sure others feel the same, but just because you live on the forums doesn’t mean you have more right to an opinion than anyone else.

    Noted.

Ok. So can we still be friends? ??

you should not make the mistake of considering WordPress a community project. That’s not the case. It is still in the hands of a group of core developers, and while they are – as are we all – susceptible to outside influences, this is still their project. And they decide where it goes.

That whole ‘inner circle’ mentality is doing this project no good at all. If Root and Podz spent more time networking on #wordpress and less time trying to help people on the forums their opinions might have been viewed more sympathetically. Now they will likely stop contributing altogether, and the only people to suffer will be the users. But hey, who cares, as long as you’re having a good time in the chatroom.

I have a right to an opinion when any change proposed will impact on me.
I help out here. It impacts on me. Root and Goodsnake do too.
Patronising ? Maybe, but if those people that are saying any move will be good prove that they are not just in it for themselves by actively helping others out, all would be well. But they aren’t going to do that are they ?
    From the Donate page above:
“The most valuable donation you can give is your time, be it on the support forums, coding, or writing documentation.”

“If Root and Podz spent more time networking on #wordpress and less time trying to help people on the forums their opinions might have been viewed more sympathetically.”
    Been there done that.
“less time trying to help people on the forum” And who the f**k is going to help people then ?????????

podz I think that was sarcasm. And I know what our friend anon is referring to.

Well, according to Matt the new super-duper Kubrick-based default is going to do away with all CSS queries, so you will be surplus to requirements.

From the new user perspective how can there be any difference between the current (awful) default WP layout and a new (possibly elements of) Kubrick layout.
If its the default, its the default it matters not what the previous version is – “if my uncle was a woman hed be my aunt”
feels like people just dont like change regardless of whether its good or not.

“feels like people just dont like change regardless of whether its good or not”
    R E A D what I posted above ?

If anyone wants to release a highly customized, plugin heavy, graphically interfaced version of WordPress what they need to do is fork the distro. Just leave us out of it.

podz – Ive read them all, and as we dont yet know what the final 1.3 will be like theyre largely irrelevant, as is roots last comment.
specifically, the default Kubrick doesnt use any plugins so regardless of the final result of 1.3 that is also irrelevent

podz: I don’t see your point. You’re indirectly suggesting that no change should be made to WP from now on, simply because you don’t want to answer support questions?
Playing ‘support guy’ is entirely your own doing, I don’t think it’s worth holding back progress on WordPress, just so that you can pull out answers from your mental faq.

“Maybe, but if those people that are saying any move will be good prove that they are not just in it for themselves by actively helping others out, all would be well. But they aren’t going to do that are they ?”

Please don’t presume that just because you aren’t seeing people deal out support here on the forums, that they aren’t doing it.

Kubrick is a highly hacked version of WordPress. Putting aside the visuals it is a completely different animal.

again though, its only a highly (relatively) hacked wordpress as its not the standard install – were it the standard install it would be just that.
