why two redirects?

This is a best practice redirect for https, otherwise a HSTS header wouldn’t be set on both domains. For more details on this, see this article:

To speed up the redirect I recommend enabling the .htaccess redirect in settings/ssl.

Please note that Google will only show the endpoint of this redirect chain, so users coming in from Google will never get redirected anyway.
