Why does Facebook Thumb need to be in the top level wordpress menu sind the latest update? Is this necessary to spread awareness or make your plugin more popular? Cause it doesnt make sense AT ALL. Contrary to some other plugins this is a set once and forget plugin so why does it need to use space in the top level menu? I am so sick of plugins and themes that clutter the top level menu with all their unnecessary entries instead of using the proper submenues (like Settings in this case or appearance for themes).

I hope you will consider to change this for the next update. It serves no purpose and just clutters up the top menu unnecessarily.

    Thanks for listening!

    Hi Worldtravelgeek,

    I hear you, and I totally agree – 100%.

The problem is the number of support requests and emails I get saying something to the affect of “I installed it but it doesn’t work” where the reason turned out to simply be that they didn’t think to look for “Facebook Thumb Fixer” in the tools menu and read the help – well frankly I’m astonished and not surprised at the same time.

I understand this is mostly from novices, but they make up a significant portion of the WordPress world.

I’d thought long and hard about it before moving it to a top level for the same reason you described, and so I’m treating it as a test to see if it makes a difference. Hopefully they will notice it before reaching out for support or making claims that it doesn’t work.

If there is no significant difference after a certain duration, I’ll likely move it back under the Tools menu.

Thanks for your input – it’s always helpful both positive and negative.

PS: Regarding “Is this necessary to spread awareness or make your plugin more popular?”, I honestly don’t think that would make any difference, seeing as they’ve already installed it by that time anyway.

That aside, it’s a free plugin and more exposure resulting in a higher number of users doesn’t benefit me. In fact, if more exposure resulted in more users then that would translate into a higher average volume of support requests, and so I’d argue that disadvantages me ??

    Thanks again!

    Mike.

    Hi mike,

ok, at least I understand the reasoning behind this move. Just think what would happen if every plugin and theme did that though. I understand that novices may ask redundant or even silly questions at time and most people are too lazy to read documentation or even try to look around for 1 minute or 2 to find a solution themselves. Maybe you find a better way to deal with this problem like just pasting a text block as a reply to a question like that. That should not take THAT much time. Or, move the plugin settings under Settings instead of General (cause honestly I didnt consider looking for them them there at first either) where most people will probably look for first (if they have installed at least A FEW plugins before)

Anyway, thanks for your answer and sorry for coming onto you so strong. I am glad you wrote that plugin btw! ??
