Why so many .htaccess files

  • I did a search on my WordPress directory and found no less than 17 htaccess files. I know very little about WordPress and less about htaccess but this doesn’t seem right. I note several copies are in directories belonging to W3 Total Cache/

    Why so many copies? How many of these do I need?

  • In reality you don’t need any for WordPress to work with default permalinks. The .htaccess in your root dir is for permalinks and the only only that would be added WordPress. The ones in the W3 Total Cache folders are for extra security and prevent direct access to files and execution of PHP in static cache directories.

    Unless they are causing you any problems you are best off just leaving them alone. Especially since you know so little about htaccess.

    Thanks. I think I’m at the stage with my site where I need somebody who really knows their stuff to go through clean it up & tweak it. It’s beyond me!
