    Hi,

I’ve been searching the forum for various issues and I often see that it is said when modifying the Twenty Eleven theme, a child theme should be created rather than editing the original.

What would be a difference if I copied the whole theme files and edit the style.css header to rename some info to mine, then start editing the other files without a child theme? Will it also cause troubles?

If the default theme is not active, are used functions in the Twenty Eleven theme still have some effects?

  • If you copy and rename the whole folder, then you’re not really editing Twenty Eleven, you’re editing your own theme that’s based on it; no problem.

The problems come from the fact that (a) if you edit the default theme and then update, you lose all your changes and (b) if something goes wrong with your changes to the point that you really break things, WordPress needs a working copy of the default theme to fall back on.

I see, WordPress also updates the default theme too. Thanks!
