Why remove block markers?

I am using the term block marker (in lack of a better word) about a marker that indicates which block is active. This was one of the most useful features i WordPress, but now it is gone. Why?

This marker showed clearly which block is active and then it makes it less likely that you make a mistake, either but editing or deleting a wrong block.

Was this function hard to implement? Why was it removed?
