Why not set the og:image tag to the featured image by default?

    I just went to share this page on Facebook, and found that the featured image wasn’t used as the thumbnail for the post. Facebook Debugger tells me the og:image tag is missing; and it’s right!

    I’m using Yoast SEO and noticed the Social: Facebook Image field in the post editor, which probably fixes this… but why doesn’t Yoast SEO set the og:image tag to the featured image by default? Why do I need to set the Facebook Image field manually what I have a computer that can do things like that for me?

    Thank you for reaching out.

    We understand that you configure a featured image for a post or page on your site, but that doesn’t output it as the Open Graph image for it.

    That is not default behavior. Yoast SEO should output the og:image pointing at the image URL of the featured image that is configured for the post/page. If that is not the case in your experience, we would need to know a bit more.

    A) Are you using Yoast SEO 15.0?
    B) Are you using WordPress 5.1.1?
    C) Are all other plugins and themes up to date as well?

    If everything is above is just fine and you are running all latest versions, we’d encourage you to do a conflict check to see when the og:image does get outputted and when not. We believe that either your theme, another plugin or custom code on the site is preventing this from happening.

    Thank you for your quick response Jeroen, and for confirming that I’m not going crazy. I checked for plugin conflicts, but it turned out I had used a .bmp file in that post, which isn’t supported by OpenGraph. I’m guessing Yoast SEO only outputs og:image tags for supported image types. I’ve replaced it with a .png and it now works.
