Why Network?

When I started a new site recently, it somehow became a network site, which is cumbersome because I have to navigate to my plugins through the Network Admin dashboard. None of my installed plugins show up in the site dashboard.

Is there some reason why this is superior? How can I change it back to a non-network configuration, or conversely, how can I move another site into this network?
