Why my page url suddenly changed but redirects automatically

    I have a page located at examplesite.com/1 for over a year. I have about another 100 pages located within that directory, like at examplesite/1/page

    I added a new page today within that directory, and then I went to examplesite.com/1 to update it. After updating, I noticed that my url changed from examplesite.com/1 to examplesite.com/1-2

    In the little permalink box, I tried to change the url back to /1 but it won’t let me. Every time I type in a number it changes it back to /1-2 or adds -2 after it.

    I recently upgraded to this newest version of wordpress. Does this have something to do with it?

    Another thing I don’t get is that the page examplesite.com/1 automatically is redirecting to examplesite.com/1-2 even though I never put in a redirect. Seems to me that if the url changed, I would need to put in a redirect. All of the pages within that directory are redirecting to the mysterious -2 page as well.

    The custom structure that I set up (long ago) for my permalinks is
    /%postname%/

    If that helps.

    When adding a page, I sometimes click on the permalink box and change this post name to something else more keyword friendly. In this instance I used the number 1 for the post name to keep it short.

    I also just noticed my XML sitemap updated to reflect the new urls and links from other websites get redirected to the new urls (with the -2). I am so confused.
