why multiple sitemaps and how to change it

    we have a very small site but the plugin still creates multiple sitemaps and it is hard get what the rules are for creating them.

    a) why not a single xml sitemap?
    are there any known benefits to have multiple nearly empty ones? I am aware of the 50k limit but we are very far from that.

    b) is there a “hidden” option to force “one sitemap.xml” or to adjust the settings on why the plugin creates multiple ones
