Since I installed Yoast SEO plugin I noticed my site name in the browser tab was showing with a dash right after it like this: Stay Close Travel Far-

I tried playing with the settings under Search Appearance a bit and I got the dash to disappear from the tab (no idea how). But when I search for my site on Google, the top result still shows up with a dash right after the site name.

Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

We checked on your page https://stayclosetravelfar.com/ and see that the Yoast SEO plugin is outputting the title without a dash in the source code as the following:

    <title>Stay Close Travel Far</title>

Can you please provide us with a screenshot of the search appearance settings for the home page?

Is this what you need? https://ibb.co/fyZSs0

I removed the dash from this setting and I think that’s why it got fixed on my browser tab but in search results it still has the dash.

    thanks for your help!

We checked Google’s cache for your homepage’s source code (here) and they received the correct title without the trailing -.

Ultimately Google will, as you have seen, make the final decision on what they show in their search results. Due to this being handled on Google’s end, there is little you can do to force Google to display the preferred title. The best advice I can provide, unfortunately, is to try different titles. This article provides advice on crafting good titles for SEO.

Ok I will try that, any idea how long it takes for Google to update once I change it?

    thanks!

It can take up to a week for Google to index the changes you made, depending on how often your website is crawled.

Sometimes you can speed up this process as described in this KB: Fetch as Googlebot

Thank you! And any idea how to change the sub results? It seems like Google is just picking things at random, here’s a screenshot:
    https://ibb.co/jiuG4f

Katerina is author name, About and Contact are pages, Stingray City is a random tag I’ve used in one post, Travel is a category… I don’t see the logic!

Is there a way to customize these with Yoast? Sorry for the newbie questions but I wasn’t able to find it in settings..

The sub results are called Sitelinks. Unfortunately, these are automatically created by Google and there isn’t a current way to specify what should or should not be used. Learn more here.
