• I’ve set my comments settings so that new comments much be approved. Yet, today someone who’d never left a comment (as far as I can recall) on the blog got through. And the comment was abusive & contained foul language. In fact, the ‘S’ word he used was on my blacklist. Why in tarnation did the comment settings not catch this comment??

Does this happen often in other people’s experience? Also, is there a way I can search for any previous instance of this fellow’s name, e mail or IP appearing in a previous comment (I only migrated to WP a month ago so most of my previous comments were imported from Typepad & I don’t know if WP allows you to search them)?

  • Hi. I use statcounter (https://www.statcounter.com/) which works great. You can id ip addresses, locationsa€??follow them around your site, etc.

Check your options>comments to make sure that these are checked off:
An administrator must approve the comment (regardless of any matches below)
Comment author must fill out name and e-mail
Comment author must have a previously approved comment

That should help. If you’ve already done that, you could always require your users to register and login..?

I haven NOT checked “administrator much approve the comment (regardless of matches below)” because once I allow a new comment I’d like the commenter to be able to comment freely w/o me having to approve it. In other words, I don’t want to have to moderate every single comment unless it’s absolutely necessary.

And if the comments settings work as poorly as they have in this instance then I might have to do this.

You have been spammed using Trackback.

I’m not sure what you mean. The guy left a comment like so: https://www.richardsilverstein.com/tikun_olam/2005/06/jack-abramoff-scholar-of-talmudic-studies/#comment-865.

Why do you say it was a trackback?

I have another question how the blacklist works. The rules say you can either list items with spaces between them or w. ea. individual item on a separate line. I’ve got both–items in a single line separated by spaces & items ea. on a separate line. The blacklist should work for all these items right?

I only ask because it didn’t work for this one particular 4 ltr. word I added. The comment somehow slipped through & I’m most displeased as I came to WP from Typepad precisely because TP had a low security level (but at least I felt confident at TP that if I added a word to the banned list that no post would get through w. that word in it).

That looks like a normal comment. Did he use the email of anyone who had already commented before?

I successfully use the blacklist with one word per line. It works fine.

I’m getting a little bugged out by the fact that clearly the “Comment author must have a previously approved comment” setting is not working. I periodically get linked to by an anti-Semitic site since they think my criticism of Israeli policies means that I’m a poster child for their views. 800 hits today from one anti-Semitic site linking to me! You can imagine the high quality of the comments I’m getting!

Can anyone think of a reason the setting might be disabled? Are there any plugins that might conflict with it? I have spamkarma2 and bad behavior installed.
