• There doesn’t seem to be any options for the size of the pages of the book. Everything is so small and fixed in its size. Is there anyway to change it?

There’s so much white space not being used. There’s all this white space not being used and no mater how big I make the font, the page size doesn’t increae.

The book cover seems to take up the full space from top to bottom of the page, but then the chapters themselves take up about 70%. Also the only options are page numbers or Previous / Next.. why can’t you have both? Also, it’s very counter intuitive that you can’t hit the left / right arrows on your comptuer keyboard to move pages… but you can swipe? Is this only designed for mobile? is that why it’s not taking up the whole screen?

I feel like I’m missing a ton of settings or something.

  • Hi,

There is an option to at the bottom of book in the admin dashboard Style Book Page, You have an option to select the font-family and font size as well.
There are Previous/Next Button to navigate to different pages of books. If you want to see on smart device then the page swipe option will also available as well.

    kind regards

This changes the size of the font but not the size of the “page”. The space that the page of the book takes up isn’t the entire space the book has on the web page… the pages are restricted to an arbitrary small size. Even the book cover is larger than the book “pages”.

All increasing the font does is make less words on the page.

Also I would like to be able to use keyboard arrows to go back and forth on a computer, not just swiping or clicking previous and next.

You should also be able to have “previous” and “Next” buttons at the same time as having page number buttons. I’m not sure why it’s either or.

This is really an interesting plugin, but I don’t think it suits my needs. It looks like it’s designed for smart phone or tablet use and not all devices, it seems to be designed specifically for a smaller screen with a touchscreen at least.

Hi Olandir, I see the same issue. Is there another book publisher of this type that you would recommend with better use of screen space and navigation?

Or Irfan, is this an issue that BookPress is planning to address? It sure seems like an important issue. White space is wasted space. And arrow navigating seems pretty fundamental. I am in need of this kind of plugin, but not with those issues. Thank you.

To answer your question to me, no there is no other similar book plugin (beleive me, I’ve looked).

I decided to basically use the features of wordpress along with a few small plugins to make something that will work for what I’m publishing.

I do hope that in the future BookPress will address these features because I really like the concept, I just think it was designed for a different type of user or purpose than what I have in mind.

Thank you, Olandir, for your immediate and helpful reply. You have saved me a great deal of time searching. All the best with your publishing/book project. ??

    Hi

The idea with the plugin was to create a ‘book like’ feel on a PC screen. That’s why it has ‘pages’ with plenty of ‘paper/space’ around the text – just like a printed book would have space around the textand not run right up to the edge of the paper. It’s not designed or optimised for use on mobiles – it’s meant for a PC screen. If you want to ‘fill’ the screen with text, then a normal WordPress page or Post would do that.

Also, we have to control the size of everything so that, for example, footnotes will appear on the page where the reference for them is – if fonts/text can just flow over multiple pages and these can all change size, it’s much harder to ensure that other book elements like the annotations appear in the correct place.

Thank you, Paul! Another speedy reply. Very cool. I think the book-like feel is awesome. I want that. I am not looking to fill the screen as on a blog page, but could you guys make the pages a little more efficient with space? Even for an average book, the amount of white space in your sample is unusually high (except in books that are attempting to make a book appear more lengthy than it is by filling pages with white space). Which is an interesting point… all that space might subconsciously lead a reader to assume that the book is lacking volume. ??

Your comment about fonts/texts… the size of fonts is adjustable, right? Because some of us are losing our 20-year-old eye sight.

I am glad you are making accommodations for footnotes because I will have lots of them.

About optimizing for mobiles… I hope that is in the works. Isn’t that kind of essential in today’s world? If not, do you have a plug-in that would offer the book format (all the benefits of tables of content, bookmarks, etc) (and even less white space!) for readers using mobiles? I could then give people the option for one or the other.

    Thank you,
    Jennifer

Jennifer, I sent an note through your blog with what I hope might be some helpful information.

Thank you, Olandir. I haven’t got it yet, but it is probably on its way.
