Why is “Admin” called “Meta”?

Newbie question. Please don’t yell at me. I want to learn. I discovered quite by accident that, to replace the “Admin” section in the sidebar that was removed, I needed to drag “Meta” up there. Okay, it worked. But why is “Admin” called “Meta”?
