• I have never once been able to get the WP automatic upgrade feature to work.

I disable all plugins before beginning the upgrade, but it inevitably hangs at some point in the process or doesn’t even start at all. At which point I have to download the upgrade and do it manually.

What other factors influence the success or failure of the automatic upgrade? Why would it work for others and not for me? I don’t understand.

  • I had this problem when I was with a certain hosting company that had restricted a lot of the permissions on my server, now I’ve moved hosting companies I haven’t had this problem.

I just did it and was fine…what was your problem?

Well, it stopped this time on “downloading update”. Nothing happened after that. I then tried it again, and it got stuck at the same place.

With previous versions, it got a bit further. But it never worked. One time it really screwed up my installation and I had to restore from a backup, and then re-install manually.

I really don’t know why this is happening. Could it have something to do with my host?

It’s always worked for me, through simple-scripts.

In two years over 30 installations with 3 different hosts I have about a one-third failure-to-update rate with the auto plugin. I have not isolated any particular causes, but all failures were “hangs”, without error messages or drama.
