Why does the plugin add forceSSL to the tracking code?

Hi! I see that the plugin adds the following line to the tracking code:

__gaTracker(‘set’, ‘forceSSL’, true);

Why does it do that? Does it have positive implications for the site? Would it not potentially slow things down?
