• I undid recent changes to css and I deactivated recently activated plugins, but still:
    A black bar now runs thru all webpages (the “footer-wrapper”), and the sidebar widget now starts after the main content ends. The footer content is not visible, just the black bar (tall enough for one line of text, but empty). Why?

    I don’t know what you did or how you’re building your website… but your site’s layout is seriously messed up.

    All the page content and footer have been shoved into the section of the page that should contain only the header.

    So it’s not surprising you’re having these layout issues.
