I found the problem to my messed up homepage: W3 Total Cache. After disabling this plugin everything returned to normal.

Why is this and what caching plugin should I be using to avoid this problem?

    Thanks.

  • W3 Total Cache can be challenging to setup, and it is often a case of trial and error until your find the settings that suit your particular site. For a faster install-to-functioning caching plugin, try SuperCache:

Thanks for your reply, Barnez. I found out that I could switch the ‘minify’ settings from automatic to manual and that solved it. Now I can just use it for cache. I guess automatically “minifying” all of the Javascript, CSS, etc. files disrupted the layout. I don’t see how you can cut some of those pages out to optimize performance, especially using an automatic plugin function.

Btw, do you know if minifying is as important as just clearing the cache?

Great news. I have also had trouble with minifying, and gave up after trying all the different plugin options.

In respect to performance, the caching itself will have much more of an impact on site load than minifying only.

You can check your site performance with your caching enabled here:

You could also try an additional minifying plugin if you were still keen on getting it up and running:
