• This may be a really dumb question…

Why do people register at my WordPress website?

I know you have to register to post comments, but no one is posting comments. I just get occasional notifications of new user registrations on my WordPress site.

Thank you in advance for your possible explanations of why this happens, what it means and any suggestions on what I might to do follow up on this activity.

This site is websitedesignby.com, no this isn’t a trick to get you to visit.

Perhaps they are not humans, but a script is registering users in an attempt to break in & hack your site?

Users with the role of Subscriber can’t actually “do” anything on the site but some sites will sometimes offer special, subscriber-only, content. So someone may have liked your site so much that s/he wanted to make sure that, if there were any “specials”, he’d be able to access them. That’s why this is a Good thing.

Don’t feel obliged to now offer subscriber-only specials. Many blogs don’t bother and people still subscribe as a way of indicating that they’re a fan of the blog and will probably be reading it regularly. Build up a reasonable list of subscribers and you might want to look at emailing them when you’ve added a particularly good new post (there are plugins for this) or giving them a sneak preview of something that won’t be on public display for a few weeks.

So registrations can sometimes be a good sign.

numeeja – I think a percentage of them could be just sniffing around.

esmi – Thank you for the informative reply. This helps me understand possible legitimate motives for people registering. I will continue growing my content and who knows, maybe some day I will offer something interesting to my subscribers.
