• This is a question about what could have bloated my wordpress site from around 100 MB to around 500 MB plus a 50 MB database after some recent changes which I will describe.

My site has plugins such as Elementor Pro and Duplicator Pro. Perhaps the bloat is related to those, so I may need to post in that forum. But I want to start by trying to understand some basic information about how wordpress files take up space on disk.

I created a wordpress site on my own, using Elementor and adding some pictures and text, about 5 pages. The Duplicator Pro backup was about 100 MB in size (zipped). I then turned the site over to a professional designer to redesign and add more photos. I gave her about 20 stock photos at about 1 to 1.5 MB PNG files. She didn’t downsize them or change them to JPEG before uploading them to the media center and using them in the site.

She may have done other things to do the site I’m not aware of. But the next time I went to make a duplicator pro backup, the size was something like 420 MB zipped. It reported there were 500 MB of files before zipping and a 50 MB database. The site still has about 5 pages and 6 posts. That’s it.

Could uploading 20 1.5 MB images cause this great expansion of size? I since removed them and replaced them with 75 kB images and got the zipped size of the site down to 360 MB. But still, huge.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Hi, you can ask your hosting provider about the usage of the disk space, they can find out where the big files are located
