Why are WP ecommerce plugins so bad?

I’ve tried WP e-commerce and Shopp. It’s not that the plug-in itself is bad, it’s the support. The support forums on both are riddled with unanswered questions and both companies ignore pre-sales emails.

Is there an alternative? The mom-and-pop approach for both these plug-ins has me rethinking WordPress as a platform for serious business.
