why are tags stripped in import?

Yes, the plugin removes extra line breaks even when you don’t choose the “clean up HTML” option. That was intended to help with badly formatted files, but I’m moving the code into the cleanup option in the next version.

In the meantime, you can comment out lines 421 through 426 in html-importer.php to keep your existing line breaks.

Thanks for the advice — I will definitely try it. Of course, I’m using this valuable importer to convert precisely formatted poems, and now am wondering about other files which were imported from elsewhere and probably do have messy formatting. Thanks.

I might create an option to prevent the importer from stripping line breaks… but there are way too many options as it is.
