Why Allow Comments?

Hi All,
I was just wondering about the benefits of allowing comments. I personally don’t have them on my site because I felt I would prefer it to be a one-way communication like a book.
However, I am wondering if allowing them might increase hits through engaging discussion and also whether there would be any further SEO benefits?
Any opinions would be much appreciated.
