I get dozens of messages appearing in the Spam folder on my site every day.
Most are trying to punt cosmetics.

    I have akismet installed.

I have set my discussion settings so that only registered and logged in users can post comments, but in the Spam folder, I can’t see which user actually posted the comment, so I can’t ban them!

How can I see which user has posted the spam?

  • They’re probably pingback/trackbacks. See this thread. You can turn them off in the Discussion settings.

If they’re moved to the spam folder, they shouldn’t show up on your site, right? I wouldn’t worry about it — this is what Akismet is for.

I understand that Akismet is working, and keeping the spam from my pages, but what I’d like to know is this:

How is this spam even getting into the Spam folder, when I have my security settings such that only registered users, who are logged in, can leave comments. Yet none of the comments in the spam folder are from registered users.

Here’s a sample screenshot of the spam folder, showing Author names with URLs.

How are they able to post (even if Akismet does trap it) when not registered?

Those are not comments, they are pingbacks.

Pingbacks are different than comments, they just show up in the same place.

    Ahh, thanks for that!
    That makes more sense now.
I was a wee bit worried there was some kind of security hole for a while there.

To be specific, those are trackbacks. Nevertheless, if you want to block them entirely, use this plugin.

I know it says it has not been updated in 2 years. No worries, it still works fine. Been using it for years, very effective.
