white screen of death vs. fatal error memory allocated

    Ta-daa!

    So early this afternoon I came across a very, very bizarre problem on my blog (https://www.alicetragedy.org/blog)

    the main page (front-end) was showing me a fatal error // allocated memory message and redirecting me to line something something of akismet. Since I couldn’t log into my admin area, I did a quick fix by renaming the akismet plugin folder, and it worked fine. a couple of hours later, same thing happened but with an error on a line of another plugin file. It was something I wasn’t using anymore and had deactivated, so I deleted the folder. everything turned out ok, but since I could log in again, i thought it better to go through some of the plugins and double-check that I only had activated the ones i really needed.
    having gotten home from work, my site threw another similar error.
    I tried all the fixes to bring php memory up a notch, but having a php.ini + .htaccess + n extra line in my wp-config file worked.

    About an hour ago, I again couldn’t access my blog.
    Problem this time: white screen of death.
    I’ve tried various things, including reverting back to 3.5.2, but nothing seems to be working.
    The strange bit is that I have not changed anything on the site in the last couple of days (my last post was before the weekend and everything was fine after that), so I really don’t know what’s going on.

    since my alicetragedy.org site works alright, I assume it isn’t a problem of the server being down. I’ve tried turning on the debugger, but it shows me NO ERROR whatsoever, and the log gives me only 200 status codes, so…. now what? I’m lost.

    also, out of curiosity: is there a way to backup my database from the control panel of my host server? can’t remember when was the last time I backed up, and I’d like to be 100% sure of nothing huge getting lost before playing around too much…

  • Look for phpMyAdmin tool on your hosting and backup your site.

    A note of caution: Some of the scanning tools I used show zero content. So, a new backup may not contain anything as it looks like a defaced site. Better look for a previous backup or seek your host’s support so that either they may help you with a restore or they can provide you with a backup as all good hosts have systems to backup sites automatically.

    thank you for your quick response.
    you are right – it seems like the database is empty ??
    any thoughts as to what might have caused it? I’m guessing it must have been a security hole somewhere, as my posts were all still there last night.

    It can be a site defacement – type of Brute Force attack or someone accidentally deleting the site. Look for the error logs at the root of your site that can give you more precise info. Your hosts can also help you with the issue in many ways.

    Hi Krishna,

    thank you.
    I’ll be looking for better ways to protect my site from now on..
    I’ve contacted my host’s support this morning and they did not only reply within a few hours, but also made some fixes to the php allocated memory and updated my database from their backup, meaning that my site is back up, working, no data has been lost, and all of this without me lifting a finger (almost). I’m truly amazed – that’s the kind of support that makes me very happy ??
