I logged into the dashboard and deleted several spams that Askimet caught. The screen turned white. Never could get back to the Dashboard. Now my homepage is white.

I can still access everything by FTP. Is this the security issue that needs the upgrade to 2.8.3?

Any clues as to what might have happened and how to fix it?

  • FTP to your installation folder and rename the Akismet plugin to deactivate it and see if you regain access. If you do then deactivate all the plugins and update your installation, reactivate the plugins one by one and test.

If that fails, using ftp once again rename the plugin folder to something like pluginsbak and make a new folder named plugins. Try accessing your site – upgrade to latest version.

With Akismet – once you have regain access and all is working fine, use another browser and enter a comment full giberish and a number of fake links. Akismet will treat it as a spam comment. In your admin panel delete it to see if the problem returns. If it does then you might want to check your akismet settings and refer to the plugin home page and see if there are known issues.

    I upgraded to 2.8.3

I renamed my plugins folder to plugins_bak

Still no luck. I get a white screen when I go to my homepage and I can’t access the admin.php or any other page.

I can still access my site thru FTP.

I called my host and they did a scan on their end and found no problems.

I was working on the function.php file just before I lost everything. However, I didn’t lose everything for a good 30 minutes after adding something to the function.php file. I restored the original function.php file from the Theme files that I had saved on my hard-drive. Still no luck.

    Any other ideas?

Rename your theme folder to deactivate it and revert to the default theme.
Leave the plugins deactivated as above and try your site again.

Please provide your site’s url as well

    I renamed my theme folder.

I renamed my plug-in folder and created a new folder called “plugins” with nothing in it.

    Still no luck.

I feel like I might have been hacked. I’ve been reading about a hack that adds a malicious .jpg to the database. I’m going to start searching for this. If I find anything I’ll post here so everyone will know.

Zgani, i don’t you, neither do i but you saved my life with your explanations and expertise to solved the same issue as Jabbok.

    Thank you

Thank you all for your insights….ZGani !? I am following this process and I am still having “white” screen problem…any additional ideas ? I have just upgraded to 2.8.3 and was embarking upon plug-in updates when I “lost” the site, fortunately it is a development project but it would be nice to try and resurrect it rather than reinstall.

Thanks again for all your help
    Best Regards
    Andy

    @090178 you are welcome.

@andy – the next best thing I can offer is to take a look at your site and see whats the problem. Same offer to Jabbok.

I am tied up for the next 6 hrs with meetings but if you shoot me a mail to [email protected] with dummy access details I’ll take a look soon as am free and report back.

    Hey ZGani…
I believe the problem lies in the permissions of the files after the 2.8.3 update….
When I revisited them I found critical files that did not have read permission…hence nothing on the screen.

I reinstalled 2.8.3 a second time and double-checked the permissions. I found some that weren’t right, especially in the admin and includes folders. WALLA…. it’s back up and running.

    Thanks for the help.
