White screen of death

I tried to update a few plugins and possibly also the theme but it all went terribly wrong. I am now faced with the white screen of death and get a http 500 error. I can’t access any pages or the admin panel.

I have already accessed the ftp site to rename the plugin folder, theme folder and .htaccess file (individually and all at the same time) but nothing has worked.

Can someone please advise what step I need to take next?
