    Hi all…

I am a newbie and need help…I am using a MAC and looking for blogging software. WP has a good rep but am concerned about some of the install issues and constant upgrading (from what I have read). I want to run a business and not have my time taken up with tech issues.

How simple (or complex) is it to install on a MAC and maintain?
If I choose the self-hosting, I assume I can use any hosting service I choose? Any recommendations? (godaddy?)
Is there an advantage of self-hosting versus the free WP?

    Thanks for your help
    Ron

WordPress is not an app you would install on your pc or mac, unless you intend to create a “development” machine where you can work on wordpress locally, before committing any changes in themes or site development to your live server.

This would involve installing and correctly configuring MySQL, php, and apache on your mac. While that is something that people do every day, it isn’t always for everyone. It can be challenging if not familiar with the basics.

On the other hand, all you need is a hosting service that meets the requirements, and WordPress is up and running live in no time.

Here is a breakdown of the basic differences between self hosted wordpress and free wordpress.com blogs:

    Thanks Clayton.

I found the benfits of .com vs .org helpful. I like the fact that with .com all setup, upgrades, backups etc. is taken care of. I want to run my business and blog not have to worry about all the tech issues with the .org (own install, upgrade, spam protection etc).

If I use .com with domain masking (with my url/domain name) will search engines be able to find me? Thanks for your help
