Which version and what plugins to create a blog community?

Hello people.

I would like to get WP installed again and i would like to turn it into a community-style blog. Like a place where people can register, have their profile etc. The usual.

Like with most software with a strong plugin-base, there’s a big cloud of versions that need to match to avoid incompatibilities.

So i would like to ask if anyone could recommend me a version of WP to use and why, by telling me which plugins you would recommend i’d get to turn WP into a community.
