• Hi, all. I am looking for themes that let me post several articles across, the way newspapers have several articles across their front page. Also, I would like to pick the order and position for articles to be displayed (like a sticky post, but for a bunch of different posts), rather than having the newest articles displayed most prominently.

I have found many, many free themes that allow one column of posts and multiple columns of non-post stuff such as widgets, archive lists, and blogrolls, but hardly any free themes that allow multiple columns of actual posts. (Or at least, I can’t figure out how to use them for multiple columns of posts.) Viala is a free theme that does what I want, but I don’t like how it looks–I want something more colorful (preferably red!)

I have spent a LOT of time looking through the free themes here, and have not found anything that meets my needs. Almost all of the free themes display posts blog-style: one post across, newest first. Also, it seems extremely hard to figure out what functionality or customization a theme offers unless you actually install the theme. Am I missing something here?

I am willing to pay $80 or so for a theme if need be, but again, I have trouble figuring out what functionality the fee-based themes offer. Most of the sites that sell themes just show you a little thumbnail of a bunch of themes, and then want you to pay before you can really figure out what their themes do.

Help will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

  • You will probably have difficulty finding a free theme with the level of features and functionality you are describing. There are lots of great commercial magazine / news style themes available which might have the design and features you are after. All the good commercial theme developers have full information about the functionality of their themes and live demos you can test out first. May I suggest you take a look at the extensive collection of themes here.

Thanks for the suggestion, Premiumwp. Some of the Solostream themes look good, but I don’t see anything on Solostream that I would consider a “live demo” — just a small picture that doesn’t even show one whole page of a website. And at $79 to buy one theme, and no refunds, I’d really like to know what the theme does before committing to buying it.

Anyone have experience using Solostream themes to do a newspaper style (multiple columns of posts) layout? Or anyone have any other suggestions?

Solostream do have live demos of all their themes. Near the top on each theme page there is a link called “Demo Site” that takes you to a full live demo site of the theme. The link to the demo is not as easy to see as it should be, and Solostream should probably do something about that.

Thanks, Premiumwp, the information about finding the live demo area was very helpful.

I have now purchased a theme from Solostream. (Well, actually, three themes. Solostream was having a three-for-one special.) I made sure to click through your site when purchasing.
