Which Schema type to use for a technical blog? (BlogPosting or TechArticle)

    Hello!

    First of all, thank you very much for creating such an awesome plugin. It had a great easy to understand interface with lots of useful features.

    After activating your plugin, I configured the settings then I noticed that there are two schema types available by default. We can access them from the Schema > Types entry from the dashboard. The first one is for posts while the other is for pages.

    The post one is configured as follows: Article – BlogPosting.
    The page one is configured as follows: Article – Empty/None.

    Note: I am using the Yoast SEO plugin alongside with your schema plugin.

    My Questions:

    1). As I am running a technical blog, should I change the “BlogPosting” type to “TechArticle”? or should I just leave it as it is while adding a new type as “TechArticle”?

    2). Some of my pages (not posts) contain one video, others contain two and few contain none. How should I define the schema types in such a case? The default schema for pages is “empty or none”. Shall I change that to “Multiple Videos”? Or am I suppose to create multiple types of schemas and select the right type for every page?

    I have tried to create multiple schema types but I couldn’t see any option while editing the pages to select the right Schema for each page. I can only see the option to exclude the Schemas altogether but not to select a specific one for each page.

    Your clarifications would greatly be appreciated.

    Hopefully, you can append the answer to this question to your documentation so that other users can benefit from it.

    Hi Kronomia,

    Glad you like the plugin, and I hope you will find it useful.

    It’s important to know that “Article” is the main Schema type, other types in the list are subs from the main type Article, this means both (BlogPost and TechArticle) are Articles, but for more specific type, that’s why it make sense to define sub types when you think it can describe your content in a better and more accurate way.

    When you activate Schema plugin for the first time, it will create the basic types for you, so you don’t have to make a lot of configuration yourself.

    The plugin defines the main Schema type “Article” on “Pages” to be valid for any type of website, so we don’t need to define any sub types in this case.

    All Schema plugin settings are made for You to decide, you can edit anything you want and set it the way you think will work best for your website.

    Here is my answers to your questions:

    1) Since TechArticle type is available, I would recommend using it. in this case you don’t need to create a new Schema Type, instead you can Edit the Schema Type for “Posts” and change it from “BlogPosting” to “TechArticle”.

    This is what I would personally do if I run a Technology Blog.

    2) I would go with one video only. The other option for multiple videos will take longer time to run and may slow your site, or script may time out.

    So, I won’t go with that unless I can deal with theses issues. Also, VideoObject post meta in editor page will allow you to add details for the first video only.

    Important note about having multiple types:

    Schema types will run on specific custom post type, so it’s per post type, this means if you have two types of schema that has to run on the same post type, this will lead to a conflict, so only the latest defined type is going to work.
