I’ve been searching through the Yoast Knowledgebase and this support forum trying to find a clear explanation of the exact hierarchy used when choosing what image will display in social media. I found this list in a couple posts on this forum from a Yoast contributor:

    • A user-defined image “Facebook image” in the Social tab of the Yoast SEO meta box.
    • A user-defined “Featured image” for the product page
    • A prominent image from the page’s content.
    • The default “Social image” for products in Search Appearance.
    • The site’s fallback/default social image (set at SEO > Social > Facebook > Default image).

On my site there the first one does not exist. Under the social tab for a page there is only “Social Media Appearance” and “X appearance”. Did “Social Media Appearance” replace “Facebook image”? And what is the 4th item: The default “Social image” for products in Search Appearance?

    Thank you!

    Hi @lyeffeth

When you edit the post and check the Yoast SEO metabox > Social tab, scroll down and there you should have a social image field to upload FaceBook images. This has the highest priority.

The search appearance was a part of old settings. It has been removed in the new settings. I am sorry for the inconvenience.

I do not have a field to upload FaceBook images. Just a generic social image (see screenshot). Did Social Image replace Facebook image?

And otherwise, the order of priority is correct? so

    • A user-defined image “Social image” in the Social tab of the Yoast SEO meta box.
    • A user-defined “Featured image” for the product page
    • A prominent image from the page’s content.
    • The site’s fallback/default social image (set at SEO > Social > Facebook > Default image).

Did Social Image replace Facebook image?

Yes. It’s not only used by Facebook but WhatsApp, LinkedIn etc

And otherwise, the order of priority is correct? so

You can read about the priority here.

Ok, Thanks. Just FYI, that link has the same list as I posted in my initial thread and which you confirmed is outdated (Facebook now called Social and Search appearance was a part of old settings and has been removed in the new settings).
