• I usually install WP in a directory, and set the site to show in the root so the install directory is clean, and to help with attacks. So mysite.com/mysite for install, site is reachable at mysite.com

Some plugins modify .htaccess like Better WordPress Security (Now Ithemes security) and SuperCache. Sometimes they modify the root .htaccess and sometimes they create and modify the directory .htaccess.

I am confused over whether I should move all .htaccess changes to the root file or leave the website with two .htaccess files.

In trying to think this through, I thought that everything is coming through mysite.com so that is the .htaccess file that needs modified. But I wanted to check.

  • I have the same thing. The main htaccess is in the root. There also is an htaccess in wp-includes and wp-content which has been added by security software. It is to keep bots and searches of those directories.

Thank you for the reply. I have index.php silence is golden set for the install directory. I thought the purpose of that was to stop directory scanning? And if they can’t scan the install directory, they can’t scan directories like wp-content nested inside the install directory?

I have index.php silence is golden set for the install directory.

It is normally in the wp-content directory.

I am not sure what you mean by the install directory.

You can move the data if you like. Just make sure you back up the original htacess.
