• I apologize if this has been addressed. I’ve been searching for a while and haven’t found the answer.

Which alt tag do search engines look at? The alt tag inserted in the Block editor or the alt tag entered in the media library? We typically don’t add images directly to the media library. We usually upload them directly into the posts and add the alt tags in the block editor. Since the alt tag doesn’t carry over to the media library, we were wondering if search engines are picking up the images in searches. Does anyone happen to know? I haven’t been able to find out and I’ve even searched Google documentation. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • Google will look into your page source HTML and grab the alt tag from HTML, not from your database or image URL.

So if you’re adding an alt tag from Block Editor then that alt text will be rendered on HTML and google will index that.

However, when you import the image on a page using Block editor or other editors generally the alt tag from the meta image will be copied that you can edit in block editor or in the classic editor.

In short, what you show in HTML, Google will see that.
