Where, When Why do Fonts need to be loaded?

  • I have been using BuddyPress on my main site of a multisite installation, but with the recent upgrade to 3.5, I changed back to a simple WP theme on the main site.

    I noticed that now the browser tries to call up Google Fonts — and I don’t want that.

    Do the other sites in my multi-site installation also call up Google Fonts every time one of those pages are loaded?

    Personally, I block most third-party content on my browser, so it doesn’t affect me — but I want people who visit my sites to know that they are not being tracked by any third parties.

    I don’t want to go back to using BuddyPress just to avoid this issue. I have nothing against using BP, but I think it’s not really appropriate on this multi-site, because the individual sites don’t really have much to do with each other.

    Any hints, tips or tricks you can share will be greatly appreciated — THANKS! ??

  • Sounds like the theme you’re using is using Google Fonts. Find a theme that doesn’t use Google Fonts.

    Yea — I was sort of guessing that, too. I was wondering / hoping that I could simply remove the line of code that did this (or perhaps make the adjustment in a file that I could put in my child theme folder).

    Apparently, Twenty Twelve, Twenty Eleven and Twenty Ten all use Google Fonts? I use a Twenty Ten child theme on some of my multi-site blogs, but when loading that page it apparently does not make an “extra” request to Google Fonts… so I’m guessing they just get loaded in the default theme (or perhaps simply if they haven’t been loaded before, but from the default blog’s address, not from the additional/multi-site address).

    Perhaps you could try changing the fonts used in the stylesheet.
