Where to start with going from one theme to another?

    Hi guys. I’ve basically been running my site https://www.audioscribbler.co.uk on Brian Gardner’s revolution magazine theme for nearly a year now. I decided it was time for a change and went for StyleWP’s Onyx Portal theme. What i’d like to know is how do I keep the site going whilst developing and tinkering with the new theme? I’ve tried uploading the files to my filespace, but obviously the whole thing is messing up because it’s using all of the existing files and settings. I essentially need a blank working area where I can see the theme as it’s meant to be, and then slowly change bits of it like I did with the revolution theme. Any pointers? thanks.

    Thanks Samboll – in the past few hours I’ve ended up installing WAMP and sorting out a local wordpress installation to tinker with; would you say either method is preferable over the other? Is either way easier to ‘port’ the new design over once I’m happy with it?

    the only problem with local installs is if you want to keep images intact in moving a blog to live
    all url’s are relative except the media ones

    if you won’t be uploading images to use later on a live blog, then no problem

    I see. Well in that case I’ll set up a test install because WAMP is giving me a headache to be frank! I might bump this when I need help porting it over. Cheers.

    There’s a surprise, I’ve hit a wall already. “You appear to have already installed WordPress. To reinstall please clear your old database tables first.” Does this mean I can’t use any of the old posts or categories? Or do I have to duplicate the existing database?

    Edit: I’ve changed the wp_ table prefix to wp_1 and it’s worked. I’m guessing that won’t screw anything up too much?

    Edit2: It’s not using the database specified so all my posts have gone. Oops. I’ll hang on till I get a reply I think.

    you would need to do that to use the same db – personally I would create another db

    what you need to do now is dump/export the database tables from the original install (just those)
    then import this into your new install

    I did this. I created a seperate install (diff database as well) in another directory, for testing and messing with themes.

    I exported my existing wp content to the new one (had to add a few images) so I could have a mix of content to work with.

    Worked great!
