I don’t want my site to be viewed by the public until it’s completely done. How can I develop my site, view and test it without it being seen by visitors? If I have to upload it a subdirectory, is there a way to then change its location to the root directory? Please explain in simple terms. ?? Thanks!

  • One option is to do domain forwarding. Work on your site, then when it’s done forward the site to a domain that you own.

This is an option i’m considering, since I’m not very tech savvy.

Forwarding the domain may negatively affect your search engine listings, but I’m not sure by how much since you are hosting the
    blog.

That’s a cool idea, however I don’t want to keep it ‘permanently’ forwarded. It’s going to be my main site and I’ll be applying a lot of SEO techniques. Thanks for the suggestion though!

MoreInStore, theres an option when you install to chose “private” that means that wp is set up with an internal robots.txt that keeps good bots out. Its also within the settings inside your wp-admin/ after an install.

another idea: set up your .htaccess to allow your IP to view pages behind the .htaccess.

another idea: install into a folder, work on the site. When youre happy, follow the INSTRUCTIONS for moving wordpress to move it to the root of your domain.
