Where to find "How-to" for basic website (not blog)

A friend needs to build a basic website for a client. She knows nothing about WordPress, so she had looked into learning it, but found it was far too complex.

I suspect what she found was the beginnings of what’s needed to write code for WordPress, while I think what she really needs to learn are the basics for building a WordPress site (without a blog) using templates and plugins created by others.

Where should I direct her to find the information she needs?
