Where is the setting for showing the search in the member directory

I can’t find the setting that will allow the search to be shown on the same page as its members. When I go to an existing member directory admin page, I see it gives the option for search but when I then use the shortcode on the page, all it shows is the search options. I was hoping to get the search field on the pages that shows all the members.
